Chapter 8

The next day was much of the same, though Gideon did not force them to go blinded this time. At least not for the first several hours.

Eventually they stopped for lunch. No one mentioned Holly cooking again. But as they loaded back into the cart afterwards, he reluctantly informed them that it was time to go dark once more.

“How long this time?” Holly demanded.

“Only an hour or two longer. Once we're through security and reach Endorian headquarters, then you should be free to remove them.”

“Should be?” Jesse questioned.

Gideon gave an apologetic look and nodded. “I'm afraid once we're there, I will have little control over what happens. So if you're going to change your minds about this, now is the time to do it.”

“No,” Holly said. “We've come this far. We'll see it through. Mr. Fletcher will see reason and understand the important role Endor will play in the reformation of the United States once I've spoken to him.”

She was so certain of this, but the look Gideon shot Jesse told him that might not be the case. Still, he'd certainly seen far crazier things happen when Holly set her mind to something.

For her sake, Jesse gave her an encouraging smile just before everything went dark once more.

They road like that for nearly two more hours before stopping again.

The voices they heard were new and Holly's heart raced with excitement. But it was only a first level of security to Endor because soon they were on the move again for at least another hour. Time seemed to move differently when she had no standard to judge it by.

“Keep quiet and let me talk,” Gideon warned everyone the next time the cart began to slow.

“Who goes there?”

“Hey Ken. It's me Gideon.”

“Who do you have with you?”

“Mrs. Holly Hastings to speak with Danny. He's aware she's coming.”

“And the other?”

“Her personal security. Don't worry. He's unarmed.”

There was a pause as she strained to hear whatever was going on.

Someone had once told her that when one sense was dulled, the others became sharper. That appeared to be a lie. Without her sight, her hearing was no better than it had ever been.

“Move on,” the man finally said as the cart jerked and she let out a small squeal of surprise.

Jesse's heart nearly stopped at the sound and he instinctively reached for her.

“I'm okay,” she assured him. “Just a little jostled that time.”

“Stay close to me. I don't like this,” he admitted.

“Me either,” she confessed.

The noises changed drastically around them. And when they finally came to a stop and the hoods removed from their heads, they both saw why.

Holly gasped.

Jesse scowled, unable to believe what he was seeing.

“What is this place?”

“It's a racetrack,” Jesse explained. “But it's so well kept.”

One of the men traveling with them snorted. “Endor has plenty of resources.”

Gideon shot him a look that told him to shut up. The man just shrugged, jumped down and stretched before walking away.

“It's just another hub. We'll stop here for the night.”

“But where are we?” Holly asked.
